Mower Buying Guide
How to Pick the Right Mower for Your Property
A riding mower is a 5- to 10-year purchase. Getting the right one the first time saves you thousands of dollars and dozens of weekends. Here's everything we tell our customers when they call us asking what to buy. All of our mowers are priced 35% below MSRP, with free shipping on orders over $499, full factory warranty, 30-day returns, no sales tax anywhere in the US, and financing available.
Step 1 — Measure Your Property
Walk your yard or check Google Maps satellite view to estimate your mowable acreage. Use this table to match property size to the right mower:
| Property Size |
What Works Best |
| Under ¼ acre |
Walk-behind or 30" rear-engine riding mower |
| ¼ – ½ acre |
30–34" compact riding mower |
| ½ – 1 acre |
42" riding tractor or compact zero-turn |
| 1 – 2 acres |
46–50" riding tractor or zero-turn |
| 2 – 5 acres |
50–60" zero-turn |
| 5+ acres |
Commercial zero-turn or sub-compact tractor |
Rule of thumb: A 42" deck mows roughly 1 acre per hour. A 60" zero-turn cuts that time nearly in half.
Step 2 — Pick Your Style
Each mower type has real trade-offs. Here's an honest look at each:
-
Riding Lawn Tractor — Great all-around choice for 1–2 acres. Comfortable, easy to operate, compatible with many attachments (baggers, plows, carts). Slower turning than a zero-turn, but the most versatile option for most homeowners.
-
Zero-Turn Mower — Fastest mowing speed and tightest turning radius. Ideal for open, flat lawns with few obstacles. Less ideal on steep hills (weight is in the rear). Our most popular category for ½–3 acre homeowners.
-
Commercial Zero-Turn — Built for daily professional use. Heavier frames, commercial-grade engines (Kawasaki FX), and transmissions rated for 1,500+ hours. Overkill for most homeowners, but the right call for landscapers and large properties.
-
Electric Riding Mower — Lower noise, zero emissions, and minimal maintenance. Best for flat lots under 1 acre. Runtime per charge is improving but still a factor to consider for larger properties.
-
Compact / Rear-Engine Mower — Small footprint, fits through gates as narrow as 30". Perfect for properties under ¼ acre where a full riding tractor would be too bulky.
Step 3 — Choose the Right Deck Size
Deck size determines how much grass you cut per pass — but bigger isn't always better. Match deck size to your open mowing space, not your total acreage.
-
30" — Small lots, fits through most gates, rear-engine and compact models
-
38–42" — Ideal for ½–1 acre lots with trees, landscaping, or tight areas
-
46–48" — 1–2 acre lots with moderate open space
-
50–54" — 2–4 acres of mostly open lawn
-
60–61" — 4+ acres, commercial use, or maximum efficiency on wide-open properties
Step 4 — Engine Selection
The engine is the heart of your mower. Here are the engines you'll find across our lineup:
-
Kawasaki FR Series — Premium residential, 23–24 HP. Smooth, reliable, excellent for homeowners who want a step above the basics.
-
Kawasaki FX Series — Commercial-grade, 23–27 HP. Cast-iron cylinder liners, forged connecting rods, built for daily professional use.
-
Kohler 7000 V-Twin — Residential workhorse, 22–26 HP. Consistent power, easy to service, widely available parts.
-
Briggs & Stratton Intek / EXi — Value pick, 17–22 HP single cylinder. Fine for flat lots and budget-conscious buyers.
-
Toro V-Twin — Proprietary to Toro, 22–24.5 HP. Solid performer tuned specifically for Toro's deck designs.
HP guidance: 17–20 HP for flat 42" decks; 22–24 HP for most homeowners; 24–26 HP for 60" decks or hilly terrain; 27+ HP for commercial use.
Step 5 — Transmission Type
-
Manual Gear Drive — Cheapest, most durable, but you must stop to change gears. Rarely seen on modern riding mowers.
-
Hydrostatic (HST) — The standard for residential tractors. Smooth, variable speed with a foot pedal — no clutching or shifting.
-
EZT — Entry-level zero-turn transmission. Works well for lighter use on smaller properties.
-
ZT-2800 — Mid-range residential zero-turn, rated for approximately 500 hours. Good for 1–3 acre homeowners mowing weekly.
-
ZT-3100 — Commercial-grade zero-turn, rated for 1,500+ hours. The choice for landscapers or anyone who demands long-term durability.
Step 6 — Consider Your Terrain
-
Flat terrain — Any mower works. Optimize for deck size and speed.
-
Hilly terrain — Choose 4-wheel pneumatic tires, a strong parking brake, and rear-weighted designs. Riding tractors handle slopes better than most zero-turns.
-
Wet or uneven ground — Look for high-flotation tires that spread weight and resist sinking.
-
Trees and obstacles — A smaller 42–46" deck and a zero-turn's tight radius make navigating around obstacles much faster and cleaner.
Step 7 — Set Your Budget
All our prices are already 35% below MSRP — you're starting from a great place. Here's what each tier gets you:
-
Under $2,000 — Entry-level residential, typically 42" decks with single-cylinder engines. Handles flat, smaller properties reliably.
-
$2,000 – $3,500 — Mid-range V-twin hydrostatic models. The sweet spot for most homeowners with ½–1.5 acres.
-
$3,500 – $5,000 — Premium residential: Kawasaki FR or Kohler 7000 engines, fabricated (not stamped) decks built to last years longer.
-
$5,000 – $7,000 — Commercial-grade machines with Kawasaki FX engines and ZT-3100 transmissions. Landscapers and serious property owners.
Step 8 — Don't Forget Attachments
The right accessories extend your mower's usefulness all year long:
-
Bagger — $300–$500. Collects clippings for a clean look or easy disposal.
-
Mulch Kit — $150–$300. Finely chops and recycles clippings back into the lawn as fertilizer.
-
Tow-Behind Cart — $300–$500. Haul mulch, soil, debris, or tools around your property.
-
Snow Plow / Snow Blower — $700–$1,800. Turn your mower into a year-round workhorse.
-
Lawn Striper — $200–$400. Create professional-looking striping patterns like you see at ballparks.
